Introducing Me: Amara

Hello everyone! I’m Amara and I’m the Communications Director at Hearts to Heroes this year. My role as communications director is to network with other organizations within our community, contact delivery centers, and deliver donations to those we partner with. I look forward to interacting with our amazing volunteers and expanding our network to like-minded organizations!

As a child, I would’ve considered a doctor, firefighter, or police officer a hero. Now, I realize that it doesn’t necessarily take glamorous work and saving lives to become one, and joining Hearts to Heroes has helped me acknowledge that fact. There are people of all different walks of life we might not realize are heroes until we meet them, whether it is the city service worker helping keep our community clean or the grocery clerk that brightens someone’s day. By being a part of the executive board, I hope to be a helping hand to our everyday heroes whose work is often overlooked.

Outside of Hearts to Heroes, another way I am involved in my community is volunteering to teach traditional drawing to children. Although I enjoy painting and drawing leisurely, I find intrinsic value in paying forward my skillset toward the greater cause of helping kids achieve their artistic ambitions. My true satisfaction stems from helping people out, whether it is aspiring young artists looking for a creative outlet for self expression, or the valuable essential workers right here in our community.

Some pastimes of mine include dance (mainly classical ballet), playing the piano, baking, exploring new places in SoCal, and reorganizing my desk spontaneously (because why stare at your screen when you make your desk clean?). Additionally, I am pretty easy-going and industrious, and I occasionally like to incorporate the use of dry humor in my day-to-day dialogue. (If you’ve ever wanted to listen to dehydrated tumbleweed float down the Sahara desert, you’ve met the right person.)

As I meet people of unique backgrounds in my day-to-day living, the most important thing I find is that authenticity and empathy connect people to each other. Though we may be inclined to make immediate judgments on people, it is important to step into their shoes to better understand the reasons for their beliefs and actions. That way, we can forge meaningful relationships that shape us into the people we become, helping us become a more authentic version of ourselves.
